VSC-5: New supercomputer is coming

The fifth iteration of the Vienna Scientific Cluster is expected to go into operation in 2022.

As the result of the tender for a new Vienna Scientific Cluster supercomputer, the VSC consortium has chosen  Opens external link in new windowMegware (Chemnitz, Germany) to supply the infrastructure. The Megware system will comprise 1,540 AMD EPYC Milan processors, nearly 99,000 cores, and will be further accelerated by Nvidia A100 GPUs. Like its predecessor, VSC-5 will use hot-water cooling — a practical solution for taming the heat produced in the compute nodes while also saving energy in the data center.

The current flagship system VSC-4 was installed in 2019 and is still the most powerful supercomputer in Austria, reaching a performance (Rmax) of 2.7 PFlop/s. It consists of 1,580 Intel Skylake Platinum processors and a total of 37,920 cores.

The operational VSC systems have immense computing power that supports the work of thousands of scientists and researchers in Austria. Nevertheless, it is time for an update. As computing tasks become more and more demanding and the application of high-performance computing expands to ever more domains, with VSC-5, the Vienna Scientific Cluster will increase computing capacity and offer better efficiency for a wide variety of users.
