Vienna Scientific Cluster welcomes new department head

Andreas Rauber appointed as head of the VSC Research Center of TU Wien.

Starting from August 2022, the Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC) has a new scientific project lead. Andreas Rauber (TU Wien) now leads the VSC team at the VSC Research Center of TU Wien and is responsible for further successful cooperation among the VSC partner universities. Herbert Störi (TU Wien), who had held the position since 2008, stays on board as a consultant until the transition phase is over. The news was announced at the inauguration of the supercomputer VSC-5 on 23 September 2022.

Andreas Rauber is a professor in the Research Unit of Data Science at the Institute of Information Systems Engineering (ISE) of TU Wien. He has vast expertise in the field of data and research infrastructures, and holds an outstanding scientific record with research interests ranging from data management, data analysis processes and machine learning to digital preservation.

Being involved in numerous research groups and projects, Andreas Rauber brings an extensive knowledge of effective partnerships to the VSC Research Center. He is delighted to lead the VSC team and the cooperation of the VSC consortium: "The VSC is a fantastic research infrastructure offering energy-efficient compute facilities to researchers at all participating institutions in Austria at a magnitude that can only be achieved by joining forces. I am looking forward to helping steer, together with our VSC partners, the further evolution of the VSC to meet the needs of our increasingly data-driven, interdisciplinary, and globally cooperating research community in Austria."

As the management transition is taking place, the VSC continues to power Austria’s science and research by providing high-performance computing (HPC) resources, offering first-class training and education, developing Austria’s HPC infrastructure, and going strong on the international stage with Austria’a membership in PRACE, EuroHPC, EuroCC project (with EuroCC Austria) and the EUMaster4HPC.

That all this is possible is a result of a successful cooperation on the academic and federal levels, an undertaking absolutely needed for competitive science, strong economy, and society.
