VSC to ASC: Statement on the new name
Vienna Scientific Cluster renamed to Austrian Scientific Computing.
The Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC) is proud to announce its new name: Austrian Scientific Computing (ASC). This change has been in the plans for a long time, as the consortium operating the flagship Austrian supercomputers includes members of universities beyond Vienna. As of June 2025, the transition has been concluded.
VSC was founded in 2009 in Vienna, at that time being a joint initiative between three universities. Over time, the partnership has grown significantly. Today, the consortium includes TU Wien, University of Vienna, BOKU University, Graz University of Technology, University of Innsbruck, and Johannes Kepler University Linz.
The new name acknowledges the nationwide collaboration and the role of ASC in supporting scientific excellence across Austria. It also reflects the mission to provide advanced High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources and services beyond the mere operation of compute clusters. These include software environments, data transfer tools, interactive computing platforms, support for AI workflows, and many other solutions that enhance the usability and accessibility of HPC.
While the organizational name has changed, our mission remains the same. The ASC Research Center, formerly known as the VSC Research Center, continues to operate Austria’s most powerful supercomputers, including VSC-4, VSC-5, and MUSICA, from its base in Vienna, with parts of the infrastructure being located also in Linz and Innsbruck. The ASC Research Center remains dedicated to operating the state-of-the-art HPC systems, supporting HPC users, and providing expert training to help users optimize computations and learn new skills in HPC, AI, and data analytics.
“The transition to Austrian Scientific Computing underscores our broader reach and the collective effort of multiple universities working together to advance research and innovation," says Andreas Rauber, head of the ASC Research Center. "We are very glad to see that the research community is happy with the HPC services being made available via this joint initiative, with new additional institutions joining this cooperation. We are excited to continue delivering state-of-the-art HPC resources to the scientific community in Austria and beyond as its importance and impact across all scientific disciplines keeps growing.”
