VSC-5 enters TOP500

With VSC-5 – the new supercomputer of the Vienna Scientific Cluster – Austrian science and research community will soon have the next world-class high-performance computing resources at its disposal. Even though VSC-5 is currently undergoing the installation and test phase and not all components are put into operation yet, it was already ranked among the fastest supercomputers worldwide.

In the latest Opens external link in new windowTOP500 list of June 2022, the bi-annual ranking of supercomputers, the VSC-5 is placed at rank 301. The current configuration of the CPU partition achieves a benchmark value (Rmax) of 2.31 PFlop/s with a theoretical peak performance (Rpeak) of 3.05 PFlop/s. In addition, the GPU partition of VSC-5 will deliver about 1 PFlop/s. Thus, VSC-5 has an aggregated performance of about 3.31 PFlop/s – a powerful addition to the other operational system VSC-4 with 2.7 PFlop/s.

Running on CPU and GPU nodes, VSC-5 will offer even more power to perform mathematically intensive computations on very large data sets needed for big data analytics and machine learning.

The Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC) is a joint collaboration of Austrian universities – TU Wien, University of Vienna, TU Graz, University of Innsbruck, University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences Vienna, and Johannes Kepler University Linz – and financed by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. The VSC-5 system is supplied by Opens external link in new windowMegware (Chemnitz, Germany).

Details of the finished system and the final performance will follow at the opening of the VSC-5 later this year.
