Austrian-Slovenian HPC Meeting 2022 – ASHPC22
Austrian-Slovenian HPC Meeting 2022 – ASHPC22 | 31 May – 2 June 2022 | Seeblickhotel Grundlsee (Austria) & online
ASHPC22 continued the tradition of the annual Austrian HPC Meetings (held 2015 – 2020) and the first Austrian-Slovenian HPC Meeting held 2021: Bringing together scientists and technicians with a background and interest in supercomputing.
The meeting focused on recent developments in high-performance computing (HPC) and its successful applications. The program featured insights into various research domains from soft matter theory to meteorology and geophysics, presentation of new supercomputers (VSC-5, Vega, Perlmutter), discussion of needs of HPC users and industry relations. The stage also belonged to European-wide initiatives like EuroHPC and EuroCC that support the uptake and sustainable development of HPC on the world-class level.
From exascale to quantum, towards new technology, beyond current limitations
Shortly before the kick-off of ASHPC22, the arrival of the first exascale supercomputer was announced – a historic breakthrough that marks a new era of extremely powerful machines to tackle ever more complicated problems in science and society. The backdrop of the news made the keynotes on emerging technologies like exascale and quantum computing even more pertinent. How we advance technology and take on challenges of tomorrow permeated conversations with experts in general. Some of those addressed the climate change and showcased important research of weather and climate, while others presented work on innovative solutions such as the world’s greenest li-ion battery, energy-efficient cooling of data centers, and decarbonised propulsion system for cargo ships.
More than 100 participants from eleven countries attended the meeting this year, making it an exceptional opportunity to explore and exchange ideas from manifold perspectives. Once again the meeting showed that the HPC community knows no borders in conquering new territories of science and research. We thank all the participants for attending ASHPC22 and look forward to continuing productive discussions next year at ASHPC23.
Financial support for ASHPC22 was provided by EuroCC Austria and by the Slovenia National HPC Competence Centre.
